Welcome to First Presbyterian Church of El Cajon!
Maundy Thursday April 2 at 7pm
For the followers of Jesus Christ, Holy Week is a week like no other in the church year. The dramatic cantata "Followers of the Lamb" by the gifted composers and arrangers Lee Dengler and Susan Naus Dengler, takes the listener from the high praise of Palm Sunday, through the anguish of the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the cross at Calvary. On Maundy Thursday, April 2, plan to attend our special worship service when the Chancel Choir will present "Followers of the Lamb". Woven throughout this musical work, we hear the voices of Jesus and several of his followers and his mother as they reflect on the events of Holy Week. As Christians, we too are followers of the lamb. Come spend the evening as we reflect on the depth and significance of this special night together.
Sigmund Freud and other analysts of the mind have reminded us that human beings seek most of all consolation from the suffering of life. We need a word of understanding or a way to see through the darkness in order to feel whole. The resurrection presents another kind of perspective of what it is we need and how we might find a way to experience it. Jurgen Moltmann has said, “With Easter, and thus actually in every worship service, there begins the laughter of the redeemed, the dance of the liberated, and the creative play of fantasy. Throughout the ages Easter hymns have celebrated the victory of life by laughing at death, ridiculing hell, and driving out the demons of the anxiety produced by guilt.” It is rare that we hear that Easter should be accompanied by laughter, but why not?
We laugh not only at the ridiculous but also the truly surprising events of life. The resurrection is not only ridiculous but it is the most surprising consolation of life. Not because it helps us in our suffering but because we become surprisingly aware that there is such a thing as victory over the weakness of humanity. Laughter is the most disarming of emotions especially when it is directed at the threat of our misery. When people can laugh they can no longer be threatened by others and even life itself.
Easter is a time to feel joy and freedom. Come and join us this Easter for our service of renewal and grace.
